How to Travel with Picture Frames on a Plane

Can You Take Picture Frames on a Plane?

Yes, you can take picture frames on a plane! Whether you're traveling with cherished family photos, custom picture frames, or valuable artwork, understanding TSA regulations and proper packing techniques will ensure your frames arrive safely at your destination.

TSA Rules for Picture Frames in Carry-On Luggage

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) allows picture frames in both carry-on and checked baggage. However, there are important considerations when traveling with framed art:

  • Glass picture frames are permitted in carry-on luggage
  • Frames larger than standard carry-on dimensions must be checked
  • TSA agents may inspect frames during security screening
  • Custom picture frames with special materials may require additional screening

How to Pack Picture Frames for Air Travel

Proper packing is essential to protect your picture frames during your flight. Follow these expert tips from our New Jersey frame shop:

1. Choose the Right Protection Materials

Wrap each frame individually with bubble wrap or foam padding. For glass picture frames, consider using corner protectors to prevent breakage at the most vulnerable points.

2. Secure Frames in Your Luggage

Place wrapped frames in the center of your carry-on bag, surrounded by soft items like clothing. This creates a cushion that absorbs impact during handling.

3. Consider Frame Alternatives for Travel

If you're purchasing custom picture frames specifically for travel, consider acrylic or plexiglass options instead of traditional glass. These materials are lighter and more shatter-resistant.

Popular Frame Styles for Travel

At Modern Memory Design, we offer a variety of frame styles that are perfect for travel. Choose from our most popular options:

Each frame style is available with travel-friendly options including shatter-resistant glazing and secure backing systems.

Best Practices for Traveling with Valuable Artwork

When transporting valuable or irreplaceable framed art, take these additional precautions:

Carry-On vs. Checked Baggage

Always pack valuable picture frames in your carry-on luggage rather than checked bags. This gives you control over handling and reduces the risk of damage or loss.

Documentation and Insurance

For high-value custom picture frames or artwork, carry documentation of value and consider travel insurance that covers your items.

International Travel Considerations

When traveling internationally with framed art, research customs regulations for your destination country. Some countries have restrictions on importing certain materials or require documentation for valuable artwork.

I am flying from Melbourne Fl airport to Albany NY airport on Feb.6 with American Airlines. I will only have a very small overnight bag on board with me. However, I am picking up 2 large frames (each 3ftx4ft) and 2 large wood painting stretchers from a Melbourne friend and need to have them flown with me to get them to my upstate NY home.
Can those two large wood frames & wood stretchers be flown from Melbourne Fl airport to Albany NY airport on same flights with me(likely in storage). The flight is from Melbourne Fl to Atlanta Ga, then Atlanta Ga to Albany NY).

I must fly from Melbourne Florida to Albany NY with two large frames(my paintings were shipped separately; there is no glass).
The two frames are each approximately 3 ft x 4 ft.
Can these two wood frames and wood stretchers of same size be flown, (in storage), on same two flights as I am taking from Melbourne Florida to Albany NY on Feb. 6, via Atlanta Ga.? If so, would they be moved to second plane from Atlanta to Albany Airports, as most luggage is, or will I have to claim them at Atlanta Airport & then personally have them placed in plane storage for Atlanta to Albany airports?
